I have an IEP in school because I was diagnosed with autism at 3 and was in a special Ed preschool until turning to general Ed in Kindergarten but I did speech (I am no longer in speech) and had a social worker. Being pulled out of classes due to special Ed was a living nightmare for me. I am currently going into 8th grade and I am not in special education classes (the classes being IEP Math and IEP English and only those two). I hope most of these kids are living functionally.

As someone on the spectrum and mine was undiagnosed. I was born in the 80’s where autism was only a male thing. I was in special education, inclusion. All the way years K-12. Loved all my special education teachers

I hope that I can become a special education teacher or even a special education aid! I’ve always wanted to, I’m not saying my age but I’m not 13 but I have educated myself a lot on a lot of different things including the most common disabilities I would be working with ADHD, ASD, SPD you name it! Coming from someone who has ADHD I would love to help kids have a better education.

The worst part of seeing special education in schools is that they waste SO much money on unteachable children. Nobody wants to admit when they are wasting time and resources, but you see it happen every day and it's really a shame that people refuse to be realistic. Resources are not only wasted on kids who are no more than vegetables, but they are also wasted in the sense that 1. Kids who could at least be given attainable goals for daily living skills have their time wasted trying to learn to read, etc, and 2. Gen ed students frequently have their education disrupted and diminished to accomodate having these students integrated.

It sucks! It fucking sucks!!! Because you feel like a failure because there go the other kids who are on question 14/25 and your still on question 2 because you don’t see 5x5 what your brain sees is 5x5/5-5x5= and your sitting h😢trying to figure this out. Or science.. where other kids are naming the periodic table elements, and here you are googling what the hell a periodic table is!? It’s because our brains work differently. It t😢me a very long time to accept I was “different” not until my adulthood did I finally accept it. Because as a teenager your social life is your world! Now luckily for me I didn’t have a social life so nobody talked to me but for those kids who did they had to come up with some story each day to why they aren’t in a “regular” class with their friends.

If you like dealing with meltdowns, getting hit, kick, bit, spit at, or beat up, then SPED is for you. It is not what it was a decade ago. We are seeing more kids enrolled and just as many staff leaving the classroom for various reasons, be it the politics in the school/district, lack of support/resources , risk of physical harm from students, and/or having to deal with idiot parents. I don't mean to dissuade anyone from getting into this kind of profession, but this is the harsh reality of Special Education.

People w/ disabilities need to be treated equally no matter what because it’s very unfair how people be referencing their movements, speech, etc in a offensive and hateful way when they didn’t choose to be born like that and that’s just diabolical and downright evil. If you make fun of those people, get a life.

I was in special education from 4 years old in preschool through high school. I have a little bit a learning disability. It will take me a couple times to figured something out. I do have a good memory, even good on my handwriting, even drawing cartoons, and even using today’s technology. I’m always sweet and friendly person. That means that I’m outgoing. I’m smart on certain things.

Both my brother and I are on the spectrum (My autism is mild and his autism is severe) We both attended a preschool specifically for young children (Age 2.5-6) with autism where we got most of our early intervention. We had a lot of individual support as well as group outings and games. And we were taught some basic academics as well as safety and other things.

I like that the sped teacher asks her students questions, and keeps going. I'm a substitute teacher who's subbed for sped classes. The students I encounter are mostly nonverbal and some need help with motor skills. So, I sometimes am not sure of expect students to do. So when she said, she hopes that people will have expectations beyond limits in regards to the students, that's a powerful hope. That's pushing me to think I can hold students up to expectations and keep trying.
